Description

he monastery at Kloster Eberbach in the Rheingau was established by Cistercian monks from Burgundy in 1136, bringing with them vines and expertise, and laying the foundation for Pinot Noir production in Germany. Today the estate, managed by Dieter Greiner, covers 200 hectares (150ha planted to Riesling and 30ha to Pinot Noir) and as a founding member of the VDP (Germany’s finest estates), it is acclaimed by journalists worldwide. The estate’s vineyard sites along the Rhine are managed by Stefan Seyffardt, including the monopoles of Steinberg, Centgericht and Neroberg.

Grapes are sourced from this old, volcanic site in Wiesbaden – where vines have grown since the 15th century. The Neroberg vineyard is just 4 hectares, planted with 18 different Riesling clones – later ripening, and therefore the last in the vineyard to be picked. 20% of the wine is vinified in stainless steel, and 80% in 1,200 litres and 2,400-litre oak barrels, with ageing on fine lees for around 4-5 months.

Intense and expressive nose packed with honeysuckle and ripe citrus notes; now also starting to show some interest due to evolution. Full ripe fruit characters on the palate with flinty minerality combining with orchard fruit and citrus. Mouth-watering acidity and incredible length. Perfect with lightly fragrant Thai dishes, simply grilled fish or white meat.
